June Air suffers from sick building syndrome. The interview
was conducted on June 9, 1999.
1. Describe your experience with sick buildings.
"This was with my own home in
1985. Everything was brand new. There were no regulations
for fresh air intake."
2. What symptoms did you experience?
"Over a six-month period I experienced
breathing difficulties, sore throat, headaches, exema and
psoriasis, sinus and nasal problems."
3. When did you make the connection between sick buildings
and your illness?
"During a visit to my doctor,
my regular doctor who also happened to specialize with allergies,
I told him I thought I might be allergic to my house."
4. What materials were discovered to be most offensive?
"He didnít give me an allergy
test, but he explained about all the toxins in building materials.
The formaldehyde in the melamine used in the cupboards and
the fumes coming from new carpeting were noticeably bothersome."
5. What did you do to remedy the situation?
"I was diagnosed as being asthmatic.
The doctor explained this falls under the category of allergies.
Bronchial hypersensitivity was the name attached to my condition.
I use a ventilin puffer to alleviate the symptoms. My home
now has an air exchanger. The symptoms have diminished but
a cold can cause me to need a puffer."
