About This Project
The following project on the Sydney Tar Ponds (Muggah Creek Watershed) was realized as a collaborative investigation of "Our Community" as partial requirement of the graduate course Literacy, Curriculum and Technology, an open learning program from Mount Saint Vincent University under the guidance of professor Dr. Judith M. Newman. The group was made up of school and community college teachers.
The immediate goal of the project is informative, focusing on the following aspects: an historical overview of the Tar Ponds; the Health issues; and Technology and Cleanup issues. The project was realized by gathering information from the following sources: SERL (Sydney Environmental Resources Ltd.), interviews with a representative of the municipal government, JAG (Joint Action Group ), an environmentalist, a concerned resident of Frederick Street (an area adjacent to Muggah Creek), the Internet, and a guided tour of the tar ponds and the incinerator site. The guided tour also provided a very detailed information package. The study group wishes to acknowledge the cooperation shown by the people concerned especially those involved in interviews and the guided tour. |
