ACTIVITY 2 — EXPLORING AN AUTHOR'S MEANING
Now try some other poems.
Read first:
Inside Out by Diane Wakoski.
See what you can make of it.
Freewrite about your thoughts, then reread the poem a
second time, then freewrite again.
You might find it useful to post your ideas to the listserv
on this one. It's not an easy read. Feel free to brainstorm
with the rest of us.
Next try the remaining poems to explore in some depth.
Watch what strategies you're using as you attempt to understand
the author's intent. Freewrite about each of the three
poems you've chosen to explore.
What questions does this activity raise for you about making
sense of poetry?
What insights about your own reading strategies
did the activity raise for you?
What thoughts did you have
as a teacher?
