ACTIVITY 2 — UNFAMILIAR VOCABULARY
The next excerpt is taken from the opening pages of
a novel by a well known British author. This is exactly
how he wrote it.
For stylistic reasons, the author has chosen to use
unfamiliar vocabulary. He uses this vocabulary without
explanation all the way through the book. His purpose—to
keep the reader as an outsider. However, given how we
orchestrate the cue systems when we read, it's possible
to make sense of this unfamiliar vocabulary.
Read the excerpt. Respond to the questions which follow
it. Reread the piece, marking any unfamiliar vocabulary
and on the chart which follows the excerpt, explore
the sense you made of the words or phrases which were
unfamiliar.
