Constructing Meaning
ACTIVITY 1 - Making Sense Of Print

Write down everything you remember reading without looking back, then answer the questions below.

  1. Did you have trouble understanding this story?
  2. Did you write in cursive or in printing?
  3. Did you notice any typos? How many did you notice?
DON'T LOOK BACK YET—just try to list the ones you saw. If you didn't notice any that's fine—you may be a more proficient reader than you thought.
  4. Did you spot "boot" where you expected to find "boat"? Did you reread at that point, even though I told you not to?
  5. Did you notice "he"—what did you do at that point?
  6. Now REREAD. Don't be discouraged if you don't find all six "errors." Most people don't find all of them.
  7. Try this "experiment" on another adult. Try it on a student or two.
  8. What does this little reading experiment help you discover about how you read?

When you've finished all four activities, articulate for yourself your "lightbulb" moment and share it with the rest of us on the listserv.
